The Author's Biography
Norwegian Ancestors would say: "Hyggelig Ś treffe deg!"
George Mortensen was born January 19, 1948 accompanied by his twin brother, William, in New York, N.Y. to their shipping executive father, George, and their housewife mother, Jule. Although their arrival was initially opposed by their three year old sister, Leslie, a truce was secured and the family settled somewhat peacefully into their Locust Point, New York home.
Raised on the Long Island Sound, both boys grew up fascinated by tales of the sea. Following a move to Ho-Ho-Kus, New Jersey and completing high school in Ridgewood, their love of ships had turned to obsession. Working around their motherís misgivings but with their fatherís blessings, the boys spent their vacations during their college years working on a variety of transatlantic passenger ships.
Upon graduation from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio with a degree in Biology, George continued his love affair with the waterfront by working for a company responsible for managing stevedores on the piers of New York and New Jersey. When the company was forced to fold, George brokered Marine Insurance with Frank B. Hall in New York, painted ships from Maine to Baltimore with International Red Hand Marine and then followed his brother into the restaurant business.
Working in restaurant management from California to Florida, the brothers eventually formed their own restaurant company, Brandywine Downs, Inc. in Atlanta on September 22, 1978. Running three restaurants in two states, they sold the last of these restaurants in August of 2001.
George currently lives with his brother and their cat, Stubby, in the Atlanta suburb of Roswell where he has recently completed his first novel, Group 4, and is working on his second tentatively entitled, In the Shadow of the Fox.
